Plainville's Distance Runners Make the Difference in Final Meet Loss

The Plainville distance team scored 30 points to Berlin's 2 points, which proved to be the difference in the meet.  The sprinters and Jumpers had their usual solid days, but injuries, illnesses and school field trips crippled the distance group and left Berlin with only two or three healthy distance runners, to face a very strong Plainville team.  On the positive side, the 4x400m relay team qualified for the state meet and beat the Blue Devel team for the first time in several years.  All three relay teams have now qualified for the State Meet on June 2 at Middletown HS.  Sophomore Ben Kall qualified for the PoleVault jumping a personal best 10-6 and taking second.   The Redcoats are in action next at Bristol Eastern for the CCC South Championship meet on Wed. May 27.  The meet kicks off at 2:00 with the field events and 2:30 for the running events.

Maslowski's Record Setting Runs pace Redcoats to Senior Night Victories over Bulkeley and Morgan

Sophomore Mitch Maslowski set two school records, and nearly set a third, while pacing the Redcoats to wins over Bulkeley and Morgan.  Mitch's 200 time of 22.78 eclipsed a 40 year old record set by Dan Blanchette and equalled in 2003 by Alex Barwikowski.  Mitch also helped lower the 4x100 m relay record time by 0.2 sec.  Mitch also won the 100 in 11.35, nearly breaking the 40 year old 100 m record, coming within an eyelash of the 11.34 second record.  Senior Co-Captain Joe Inturri also had a great day, taking third in the 100 and 200 and lowering his Personal Record in each.   Junior newcomer, Trevor Gagnon, jumped 19-9 in the Long Jump and qualified for the State meet.  This gives Berlin three long jumpers competing at the state meet, 4 sprinters in 100, and the same 4 in the 200 - our strongest group of sprinters in years.
The Pole Vaulters had their best day of the year with four jumpers clearing 9-0.  With a strong finish the Pole Vaulting team can equal the achievements of the long jumpers and sprinters, and qualify three athletes for the states (TriCaptain, Suley Bozal has already qualified).  The Seniors capped off their final home meet on the Biscoglio Track with some of their best performances of the year:  Sam Papacoda, Dan Paszkowski, Dave Perduta, Sulleyman Bozal, Joe Inturri, Kevin Kennure, and David Bordonaro.

Berlin Relays pace the team to win against Bristol Eastern

The Boys Set a new 4 x 100 record against Bristol Eastern, while the 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relays both won while qualifying for the State Meet.
This is the first time in 5 years we have qualified all three relays for the state meet and the first time I can remember sweeping the relays against a team from Bristol.  Joe Inturri won the 100 and scored the lowest 100 meter time of the year for a Berlin Sprinter, and Trevor Gagnon qualified for states in the 100.  Junior Evan Cornwall jumped over 19 feet in the long jump to join Mitch Maslowski to represent BHS in the long Jump at the State Meet.  Sophomore Dan Labbadia also improved his Personal Record in the Javelin by 10 feet and qualified for the state meet with a throw of 145 ft.
Overall a great day to be a Redcoat!

Sprinters Go Off at Platt

The 4 x 100 relay team shattered the school record by 0.5 seconds at Platt HS on Tuesday April 28th.  Mitch Maslowski, Kevin Russell, Joe Inturri and late substitute Trevor Gagnon.  "We had to throw this relay together in 15 minutes because of a late scratch.   The whole order of handoffs was changed, but the kids still ran a great time."  The new record is 44.5 seconds.  In addition, Inturri, Gagnon and Maslowski all lowered their personal bests in the 100 with Gagnon qualifying for the states - joining Maslowski, Inturri, and Chris Lapierre.  Russell lowered his 110 hurdle best by over a full second and Maslowski lowered his best 200 time by over 0.5 seconds - both significant improvements in such short races.
Sophomore, Dan Labbadia and Senior Sulley Bozal had a personal bests in the Javelin, going 1-2.
It was a great day on the track and in the field as BHS won all but 4 events.
